Set in Yokohama, a bustling port city in southeast Japan, our story begins at the end of Atsushi Nakajima’s life. Having been ejected from the orphanage he grew up in, Atsushi is starving to death and debating whether to abandon his morals and steal so that he can eat, when against his better judgement, he saves a man from drowning in the river. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he seems rather put out that Atsushi saved him from a suicide attempt. He decides to thank him anyway, and together with his business partner Doppo Kunikida, they buy Atsushi lunch. Atsushi quickly discovers that these two strange men are detectives— but not just any detectives. In this world there exist people who have supernatural abilities, and in Yokohama there lies a business known to employ these people. Dazai and Kunikida belong to this business, the Armed Detective Agency, which handles cases deemed too difficult or dangerous for the police. Currently, they are investigating a man-eating tiger that has been terrorising the city— a tiger that Atsushi himself has been desperately trying to escape the clutches of. And so, the story begins, with Atsushi’s life not only being saved, but transformed forever!
